If you are going from a brief speedo or a regular jammer you can get 1-3 second per 50 increase in speed. The design doesn't absorb water so I suspect you get a little boost just from bouyancy. The rest is the slick nature of the fabric. I will caution that although it fits true to size on the waist, the bottom of the leg opening, near your knee, are tight to the point of being irritating. This is a good suit & no water enters the suit during flip turns which was a problem with my last suit. It is a little more $$$ than other options but you get what you pay for & this suit will outperform & outlast those cheaper options. I gave 4 out of 5 stars only because the 'cuff' on the shorts above the knee is tight. Once you hop in the water, the tightness goes away.
